Just Clowning Around – Reboot – July 2019

Just Clowning Around is trying to reboot things and start meeting again. Last year, we got kicked out of the church (OK, not really, they just wanted us to pay $100/month to use the space.)

Our next JCA meeting will be on Monday, July 29th at 7:00-9:00 pm in one of the conference rooms (Room 214) at the City of Fairfax Libarary. The address is 10360 North Street, Fairfax, VA, 22030-2514. The educational topic will be balloons… The room capacity is limited to 10 people.

We have a room reserved for August and September at the City of Fairfax Library (4th Monday of both months at 7:00pm.)

In Clown, we embark on the wondrous journey to rediscover innocence and uncover the pleasure of play. It is a daring adventure, in which we open our fragile hearts in search of fun. The little red nose (the smallest mask) is a great liberator. It requires generosity and summons transparency, revealing us in all of our wonderful and complicated simplicity.

A riotous inquiry… a playful encounter…a look at our laughable & lovable selves.

We love clowns because they make us laugh while revealing the range of mythical and emotional archetypes within each one of us. The honesty and openness we find in clown will inhabit all of our work. Open to all levels.

Clown Cabaret at the Fringe Theatre

http://www.clowncabaret.com/

Come laugh with purveyors of the funny arts. Regional performing artists explore and stretch the Art of Clown.

With an art form that’s over 5000 years old, of course there are different traditions; different schools; different styles. At a Clown Cabaret show, a half dozen or so different performing artists (or teams) share something old, something new, something innovative — something that will make you see the world in a slightly funnier way.

Drawing from modern, theatrical, circus, commedia, verbal, silent, knockabout, musical, and other disciplines, you will see a great variety under the umbrella of “Clown.”

For an evening of artsy-fartsy, pie-in-the-face, clowning fun, come to the Cabaret… come see the clowns in our Nation’s Capital who aren’t in Congress!

Clown Cabaret at the Fringe Theatre
2018 shows on June 11, and more.
http://www.clowncabaret.com/

Clown Weekends
November 10 & 11, 2018
Saturday and Sunday 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM both days
Tuition: $200; Deposit due with registration*: $50
http://www.thisisthecenter.com/cmt.html#cw_18

Class Location:
The Center – DC
4321 Wisconsin Ave NW
Washington DC 20016

Instructor: Dody DiSanto

Please join me in the messy adventure of clown – the wondrous journey to rediscover innocence and uncover the pleasure of play. Where we shine the light on foolishness in pursuit of the soft brain and open physical hilarity of fun. This work helps in all aspects of life, but truly brings a fresh muscularity to the task of performing any material.

Intended for those who have already taken some clown and seek further adventures in search of high rascalry!

During this concentrated week we will work in various size groups to set loose the true nature of your clown, develop material, build routines and explore how clowns turn idiocy into art form.

Celebrate the upcoming holidays

May 21 – Talk Like Yoda Day
Talk like Yoda Day it is on May 21. The day honors the popular Star Wars character whose grammar is any language teacher’s worst nightmare. His language, Yodish, is similar to English except the sentence structure follows the order of object-subject-verb. Yoda made his debut appearance in The Empire Strikes Back, which was released in the United States on May 21, 1980.

May 28, last Monday of May – Memorial Day
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. The holiday, which is currently observed every year on the last Monday of May, will be held on May 28, 2018. Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day – Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, whereas Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans.

June 14 – Monkey Around Day
This fun day was created in 2016 by Bob Matthews, of Rochester, NY. Bob is the creator of Holiday Insights. He selected June 14th, in honor of the birthday of his daughter Kimberly. Since she was a little child, Kimberly just loved monkeys and everything about them. According to Bob: “There is way too much stress in our everyday lives. We need at least one day to set aside our stress, troubles, and worries, and to just relax and monkey around.”

More importantly, it “brought 20 million Americans out into the spring sunshine for peaceful demonstrations in favor of environmental reform.”

Come laugh with purveyors of the funny arts. Regional performing artists explore and stretch the Art of Clown.

With an art form that’s over 5000 years old, of course there are different traditions; different schools; different styles. Drawing from modern, theatrical, circus, commedia, verbal, silent, knockabout, musical, and other disciplines, you will see a great variety under the umbrella of “Clown.”

For an evening of artsy-fartsy, pie-in-the-face, clowning fun, come to the Cabaret… come see the clowns in our Nation’s Capital who aren’t in Congress!

http://www.thisisthecenter.com/cmt.html#cw_18

Class Location:

Celebrate the upcoming holidays

Dr Seuss Day (or Read Across America Day)
Friday, March 2, 2018

March 2nd is Dr. Seuss’s birthday—what better way to celebrate than to read? Did you know Dr. Seuss would be 114 this year? While he is no longer with us, his legacy lives on in the pages of his books. He forever changed the way children’s books were written and continues to inspire generations. So this month, why not host a fun, whimsical party? Read Dr. Seuss books, use your imagination, and be silly!

Pi Day
March 14, 2018

Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159.

World Puppetry Day
March 21, 2018

Puppetry in America is older than the country itself, but until the beginning of the 20th century, puppet shows were rare. Puppeteers kept their art a closely guarded secret, certainly not shared with the public. In the first half of the 20th century, some puppeteers (most notably Tony Sarg) helped to lift the veil of secrecy, sharing information about their work, which led to the formation of the Puppeteers of America in 1937. In an effort to strengthen recognition of puppetry as a global art form and to align activities with UNIMA-USA (Union Internationale de la Marionnette), Puppeteers of America has officially merged the National Day of Puppetry with the World Day of Puppetry, each March 21.

Key Intermediate School

The Fairfax Jugglers meet most Thursday nights. As usual, caveats about their need to clean the school prior to the opening, etc., so Barry will keep members informed about changes!

Enter the parking lot opposite Japonica Street, turn RIGHT at the front of the school and drive around to the far back and the end of the parking lot. Enter the cafeteria at entrance #6 (visible past the dumpster), along a sidewalk, and this may be the best way in (if you arrive first please prop open this door). Alternately, check the Handicapped Student’s Gym by Entrance #9 or use entrance #5 and turn left at the first cross-hall, then look for the cafeteria on the left. OR: check the handicapped student’s gym by Entrance #9 after your first left turn.

The CIRCUS CLUB also meets at Key Intermediate School on ??, but in the Handicapped Student’s Gym by Entrance #9. They teach many circus skills to children and perform in parades and other venues. If you know of a child or teenager who would be interested in learning or developing those kinds of skills then contact them at Circusclub@yahoo.com
